Begin with a gentle arrival
Thessaloniki is a satisfying destination after the southbound drive. Arrange where the car will stay, check into your accommodation and leave the first outing simple. The waterfront gives you space to walk without committing to a long programme.
The White Tower is a useful landmark for orienting yourself, but the city is more than one monument. Give it time as a place to stay rather than treating every street as the approach to the next motorway.
Choose between the tower and the waterfront
The White Tower contains an exhibition about Thessaloniki. Check the official visitor information before going inside and consider the demands of stairs and a historic interior. Do not assume every level is step-free.
A promenade walk is a worthwhile alternative. After a tiring drive, a short route with a place to sit may be more enjoyable than a full museum visit. Plan the walk around the group’s energy and the weather.
Make city driving a small part of the stay
Ask your accommodation about lawful parking and luggage access. Save clear arrival instructions before reaching the city and avoid improvising a stopping place on a busy street. Once settled, decide which outings can be made without moving the car.
Historic areas and viewpoints can involve hills and uneven surfaces. Choose walking routes according to mobility and heat rather than relying only on distance. Leave enough time to return comfortably.
Plan the next chapter separately
Halkidiki is an onward mainland journey east of Thessaloniki. Pella is a deliberate archaeological detour, not a motorway service stop. Each deserves its own route and access check.
If you are continuing to an island, verify the departure port or airport and the actual service for your dates. The city is not a guarantee of a direct transfer to every island. A buffer between road travel and a fixed departure can make the whole holiday easier.
